Here's home for the night, a nice secluded campsite that I didn't know about before
A dirt road takes me into the sunset and to a campsite
I set up the tent by the Button Mountain corral as the sun goes down
I pull into my chosen campsite for the night with Piute Mesa in the background
I catch the most orange end-of-day light glowing on nearby Piute Mesa
I set up my tent behind a creosote bush as the sunset begins to fade
Yeah, sunset, with each passing minute, the sun drops a little more
Well, the sun is down, time to fix an instant meal, pull out a cold beer, and think about tomorrow's hike
The sun goes down while I drive across Lanfair Valley; I still don't know where I'm going
The sun begins to set on Piute Mesa as I drive away
The cloudburst sunset over the New York Mountains in the distance is special this evening
I stand outside looking at the sunset before getting back in the FJ to cross the wash
Night arrives while I drive higher up into the Panamint Mountains, hoping to get a spot at Mahogany Flat campground
I find myself driving up Wildrose Road into the Panamint Mountains
The setting sun illuminates walls along Wildrose Road
This looks like a good place to turn around, a four-point turn on this narrow road
I find myself back in the Lee Flat area, looking for one last campsite for this trip
Found a campsite for the night in the Lee Flat area!
Wonderful campsite, open, quiet, no people anywhere, scenic sunset, cold beer
We arrive at the Highland Lakes trailhead just as the sun begins to set
We get to see that orange sunset glow as we walk back to the FJ
When we get back to the FJ, we find that sunset is already on its way out
We walk into the setting sun
The sun sets behind the Sierras
One of the whitish peaks in the Sweetwater Mountains reflects the final sun
And we arrive back at the FJ, ready for the drive back down
The FJ has a few bumps to drive over as it leaves the Silver Peak area
The upper peaks of the Providence Mountains catch the final sun of the day
It's time to start looking for a campsite for the night
I think I'll stop here and enjoy the sunset while setting up camp for the night
I'm treated to excellent views from the Owlshead Mountains microwave tower
Lighting becomes increasingly horizontal
We cast shadows at sunset
I ponder the awesomeness of miles of miles and miles of undeveloped expanse, feeling small
Layers of ridgelines under the setting sun
Yes, Owl Peak over there, that will be tomorrow's adventure
But for now, I'll walk back down to that really tiny FJ down there and set up my tent
Looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, I arrive back to the FJ and set up my tent
The sun sets over the Owlshead Mountains as I drive onward
It's still 82°F as I drive through the pass out of the Owlshead Mountains
The temperature drops to 79°F as I exit the Owlshead Mountains pass
I drive past Owl Hole Spring at dusk, certain that a burro nearby is watching me again
In quiet serenity, I watch the sunset at Horse Thief Spring campground—beautiful
I plan to hike tomorrow over there in the Bristol Mountains, Kelso Dunes Wilderness
The sun is setting, let's look for a campsite
Chosen! I'll camp by this transmission-line tower
The sun sets behind me on the Powerline road
Beautiful sunset as my excellent hike today ends, just 1.5 miles to go
And now I'm in the land of Smoke trees again
I glow along with tips of the Bristol Mountains
The Smoke trees prepare for the onset of evening
Occasionally I like to stop walking so I can just focus on the sunset
I've almost reached the end of the Smoke tree belt
Maybe I'll go for a short drive down Henry Spring Road, since I'm here
So far, Henry Spring Road is a fun drive, but I think I'll turn around soon
As the sun goes down, I start thinking more seriously about where to set up camp
I catch the warm glow of sunset at Kelbaker Road's 10-mile bend
I sit in the FJ quietly, watching the sun go down
I decide to camp elsewhere, so I drive off into the dusk
Now I'm following an old road into the sunset
Someone delineated a parking space with rocks here
The joys of sunset in the desert
The cinder cones turn red
Tonight is one of those incredible desert sunsets
The pink and blue belt of Venus behind me is as inspiring as the sunset in front of me
I'll make it back to camp just as it gets dark, lookng forward to tomorrow
I'll arrive at Hwy 127 shortly and then drive to the Owlshead Mountains for the night
I have about 7 miles of dirt road to drive from the Kingston Wash Route down to Hwy 127
Gotta stop for a few photos of sunset on the Kingston Range!
With 10 miles of hiking ahead in dusk and dark, I put my camera away for the day
A Mojave aster adds blue to this brownish landscape
Sunset is approaching and I have about 10 miles to hike back to camp
My GPS shows me a place that might provide an interesting route down from here
There should be a slot down the hillside just up ahead facing Owlshead Peak
Well, I won't be descending here, because it's a steep drop
I'll walk over to one more place on the plateau to look for a route down
This wide canyon would guide me down, with a view over to the Quail Mountains on the way
Nice view, but I'll turn around and take a different route down
I hate to leave this view of Owlshead Peak behind me
There just aren't enough desert sunsets in one's life...
There's the FJ, I'll be home shortly
The sun sets quickly in February; I look forward to a quiet and temperate desert evening
Beautiful day comes to a close: serenity enjoyed
The famous golden light of a desert sunset slowly illuminates me
Even the juvenile creosote bushes cast shadows
And here's stray-balloon sighting #8 of the day, a personal record
Fox holes?
This is photographer light, but my moment here isn't staged
Minute by minute, the length of shadows increases
The golden sunset light fades, leaving soft light, but not for long
I follow this easy drainage as the pinkish light fades
Shhhhh, the sun is going down
Hello dusk!
From the outer valley, I catch views back to Owlshead Peak and my unfinished hike
The sun dips down as I slowly approach my campsite
And the sun drops even lower...
I catch an amazing sunset at my campsite in the Owlshead Mountains and settle in for the evening
My road narrows as it rises up into the Grapevine Mountains toward Titus Canyon
A golden sunset is lighting up the Nevada hills behind me
Down there in the sunset glow behind me is Nevada
